The SAHMRI community, particularly our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees, are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG.

Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue, a Yankunytjatjara woman, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Sunday 4 February 2024 on Kaurna Country in Adelaide, South Australia, with her immediate family by her side.

Dr O’Donoghue has left an outstanding legacy. Her leadership, determination and tenacity to influence change for her community was unwavering. Her commitment to Reconciliation and improving relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the Australian community has had a lasting impact on our society.

A pioneer in every way changing the world, you will be missed but your work continues to influence. Rest peacefully Dr O’Donoghue. We at SAHMRI extend our deepest condolences to your family and those closest to you, including our colleagues at the Lowijta Institute.

SAHMRI’s flags are flying at half-mast today in respect for Dr O’Donoghue’s passing and in honour of her lifetime of achievements.
