The South Australian Genomics Centre (SAGC) is a national, multi-institutional facility supported by Bioplatforms Australia through the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) initiative. Based in Adelaide, we bring together a team of ~16 genomics and bioinformatics specialists working across agriculture, healthcare, ecology and more. About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated NGS Specialist to deliver high-quality, lab-based genomics services to SAGC users. In this role, you’ll work across multiple biological disciplines and research projects, ensuring the successful delivery of genomics workflows under NATA guidelines.

You’ll be part of a collaborative and technically diverse team with ongoing opportunities for professional development and access to training in new and emerging technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced molecular biology procedures for DNA/RNA extraction, sample QC, library preparation, and sequencing
  • Support experimental design and provide technical input on genomics workflows
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with the SAGC Platform Quality Management System (PQMS)
  • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and ensuring compliance with WHS protocols
  • Collaborate with researchers and the SAGC team to support data generation for publications and research outcomes

About You

You’re an experienced and detail-oriented laboratory scientist with a passion for genomics and a drive to stay at the forefront of technology. You thrive in a team environment, are highly organised, and take initiative to solve problems and deliver results.

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree with Honours or equivalent in a laboratory-based science (e.g., Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology)
  • Proven experience with molecular biology techniques, particularly nucleic acid handling
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail
  • Experience in at least one and understanding of two or more of the following:
  • Sample receipt and handling
  • Sample QC (quantification and qualification)
  • Library preparation (bulk RNA, DNA, amplicon, single-cell, etc.)
  • Sequencing setup and operation (e.g., Illumina NextSeq/MiSeq, MGI G400/T7, Chromium Controller)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to liaise with stakeholders

Desirable:

  • Experience with single-cell and spatial transcriptomics platforms (e.g., 10x Genomics, Xenium, Visium)
  • Prior work in a NATA-accredited laboratory
  • Experience with nucleic acid extraction
