SAHMRI's research into Digestion, Gut Health and the Microbiome
Digestion, Gut Health and the Microbiome

A person’s microbiome is the sum total of genetic material from all the micro-organisms that live in, and on, their body. The microbiome can be broken down into distinct environments including the skin, lungs and gut. The gut microbiome is the most well-studied of these environments and has been found to contribute to immunity, digestion, weight control, cholesterol levels and other health factors.

SAHMRI’s Microbiome and Host Health program looks specifically at the health impacts of microbiota while numerous groups across the Lifelong Health and Precision Medicine themes look at ways to prevent and treat gastro intestinal disorders and diseases.
