SAHMRI’s cyclotron: a decade of quiet achievement

Deep underground at SAHMRI, the specialist team of radiochemists known as the Molecular Imaging and Therapy Research Unit (MITRU), fire up South Australia’s only cyclotron in the early hours each morning, to produce radiopharmaceuticals that are essential to the state.

The radioactive compounds forged by this unique nuclear particle accelerator, fuel crucial medical scans used to detect and treat cancer and chronic health conditions, with fresh doses shipped daily to hospitals and clinics across the state and around the nation.

Before SAHMRI’s cyclotron became operational in 2015, South Australia relied on interstate shipments, leading to delays and limited access. Now with a team that has tripled in size, producing over 13,000 doses annually, the state has a reliable, cutting-edge resource for radiotracers delivering impact that continues to grow.
