Healthy Ageing in Aged Care

Designing Indigenous aged care with a 'whole of community' perspective
Healthy Ageing in Aged Care
Project Status: In progress
Project administered by: SAHMRI

As the life expectancy of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people improves, the need for aged care is an emerging priority.

This participatory action research investigates how home-based and residential aged care services can best support the healthy ageing of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, taking into account community perspectives of health, ageing well and expectations of aged care providers.

The project aims to

  1. Define what healthy ageing means for older Aboriginal people, their families and/or carers, and their communities
  2. Identify the ways in which aged care services can best support older Aboriginal people, aligning with their understandings of healthy ageing
  3. Co-design aged care service improvements in collaboration with older Aboriginal people and aged care service providers

This project is funded by the National Health & Medical Research Council
