Translation of culturally informed diabetes training for Aboriginal Health Practitioners on Aboriginal patient outcomes: a cluster randomised trials
Effectiveness of a Diabetes Training Program for Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners
Project Status: Commencing
Project administered by: The University of Adelaide

Prevention and management of diabetes is a priority of the Aboriginal community in South Australia.

The Aboriginal primary health care workforce is integral to delivering evidence-based, culturally, and contextually relevant diabetes care. Health worker and practitioner qualifications focus on comprehensive primary health care and are not designed to provide detailed knowledge and training in diabetes management.

Together with Aboriginal Community Controlled and State Government primary health care services in South Australia we will generate evidence on the effectiveness of a collaboratively developed diabetes training program for Aboriginal Health Care Workers and Practitioners.

The research objectives are:

  • To co-design a diabetes education program for Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners with the workforce.
  • To deliver the diabetes education program in Aboriginal primary health care services across South Australia.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the diabetes education program on Aboriginal Health Worker and Practitioner knowledge, confidence, skill, practice and attitude, and secondary outcomes relating to quality of diabetes care and patient outcomes.
