A/Prof. Castro is the head of endometriosis research within the Visceral Pain Research Group at at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI)..
He is a recognised leader in the field of endometriosis, using both pre-clinical and translational science to understand mechanisms and develop targeted treatments for endometriosis. His research has generated >65 published articles, reviews, and book chapters (>5600 citations, h-index 39), including articles in high ranked journals such as Nature (x3), Cell, Science, Nature Communications, Pain (x7), Gastroenterology, PNAS (x2) and Gut (x4).
A/Prof. Castro’s research has clear translational evidence, including work with Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, which resulted in FDA approval for Linaclotide (a drug designed to relieve chronic visceral pain in irritable bowel syndrome), and ongoing work with Netris Pharma evaluating the use of a clinically approved monoclonal antibody for the treatment of endometriosis and associated chronic pelvic pain.
