Premier national investment conference to supercharge SAHMRI research

SAHMRI is honoured to be named as the philanthropic partner of the upcoming Sohn Hearts & Minds Investment Leaders Conference, which is being held in Adelaide for the first time in its seven-year history.

The conference draws global thought leaders, fund managers and investors to a single destination to discuss the macro trends and emerging technologies shaping the global investment, while also championing and supporting vital medical research.

As part of Sohn Hearts & Minds’ commitment to advancing medical research, SAHMRI’s Associate Professor Tim Sargeant will present his groundbreaking research into how the body’s built-in recycling system can be used to fight age-related diseases like dementia.

“I’m going to talk about eating yourself,” A/Prof Sargeant said.

“My lab discovered a world first method to measure how well the recycling system in your cells is eating waste material, which is known to be a key factor in healthy ageing.

“Like many discoveries though, ours opened up a whole new world of questions to pursue, which is where all our research energies are now focused.”

SAHMRI Executive Director Professor Maria Makrides thanked Sohn Hearts & Minds for identifying and pursuing the exponential benefits that come by connecting investment with research.

“There is so much common fertile ground between the investment and medical research communities,” she said.

“Artificial intelligence, digital technologies, advanced manufacturing – these are all areas that SAHMRI researchers can explore for innovations that will create healthier futures.”

Professor Makrides also thanked the State Government for its foresight and determination to bring Sohn Hearts & Minds to Adelaide.

“SAHMRI exists because leaders in our state recognised the gaps in South Australia’s medical research sector and had the vision to address them,” she said.

“Medical research is a complicated pursuit which requires investment of time and resources. We at SAHMRI are grateful to our governments past and present for their investment, to deliver the many wide-ranging benefits our institute provides across health care, industry and the economy.”

The Sohn Hearts & Minds conference will be held at the Festival Theatre on Friday 15 November. It will feature presentations on topics including stock-picking, space exploration, cryptocurrency and digital assets from prominent global fund managers and industry experts.
