SAHMRI EMCR Committee relaunches to support the next generation of researchers

Navigating the early and middle stages of a research career is a unique journey, and one that shouldn’t be walked alone. For early and mid-career researchers new to SAHMRI, fostering a sense of belonging and visibility is especially important. That’s why the institute is proud to relaunch the Early and Mid-Career Researcher (EMCR) Committee in 2026. Following a brief hiatus, the Committee is back with a renewed focus on what matters most, building a vibrant, connected and supportive network.

Committee Chair, Dr Bridget Milky says the relaunched Committee is committed to fostering a welcoming community that offers genuine peer support and strong advocacy.

“Science is incredibly collaborative, but navigating those first few years post-PhD can still feel isolating. We re-established the committee to make sure every EMCR here has a platform for their needs and a community that has their back,” Dr Milky said.

The Committee’s primary purpose is to create opportunities for connection, collaboration and skill development, while ensuring EMCR perspectives are heard. Whether researchers are looking to expand their professional networks, build new capabilities, or simply share a coffee with others who understand the post PhD hustle, the EMCR Committee is the connector.

Committee Co Chair, Dr Ilaria Pagani is using her experience to guide the next generation of EMCRs, she says it’s an investment in future research leadership.

“By combining the energy of new EMCRs with the experience of previous committee members, we’re building a strong platform for mentorship, sponsorship, innovation, and career development,” Dr Pagani said.

“I hope we can turn uncertainty into opportunity by giving EMCRs a strong voice, meaningful support, and a sense of belonging at SAHMRI.” EMCR Committee Secretary Dr Monika Kutyna says a program of social activities and professional development seminars is already in the pipeline, designed to bring EMCRs together across disciplines and career stages.

“Early and mid-career researchers often juggle research, career development, and personal responsibilities, which can make this stage both exciting and challenging. This committee aims to create a supportive and connected environment where EMCRs feel represented, informed, and empowered to grow,” Dr Kutyna said. Researchers are encouraged to stay tuned for updates in the Grater Community newsletter and keep an eye out for flyers around SAHMRI in the coming weeks.
