Information for Solicitors & executors

Information for Solicitors & executors

Thank you for assisting with a gift in a Will to SAHRMI.

SAHMRI's is South Australia's leading independent, not-for-profit health and medical research institute, dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of people everywhere.

This information provides general information about SAHMRI including suggested wording clauses, registration details and information we need if you are administering an Estate.

Although three-quarters of Australians support a charity during their lifetime, less than 10% include a charitable gift in their Will. If you or your colleagues are involved in writing Wills, you can help secure the future of charities by asking your clients to consider including charitable gifts in their Wills, once they have taken care of their loved ones.

    How can you help?

SAHMRI as a not-for-profit, is fully tax exempt. Donating an asset which attracts capital gains tax such as shares or an estate could be beneficial for your client from a tax perspective. We suggest that you seek independent financial advice.

"I give, devise and bequeath to the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute Limited of 870 North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000, ABN 54 141 228 346, (choose one of the following:)

    1. the whole of my estate OR

    2. all of my residuary estate

    3. ...... percentage of my residuary estate

    4. the amount of $.........

    5. list of asset/s

to be applied for the purposes of health and medical research by the Institute. I declare that the receipt of a Director of the Institute or other authorised officer is a sufficient discharge to my executors, who will not be bound to the application of this gift."

If you wish to support a particular area or research topic, we encourage you to discuss it with SAHMRI staff first to help us understand your intentions. It is safest to include an alternative, such as "to be applied for the purposes of health and medical research relating to cancer/heart/dementia or similar research."

If your client has left a bequest or gift in their Will to SAHMRI, we would love to hear from you as soon as possible so we can extend our condolences and our gratitude to the surviving family members and friends.

We ask that you kindly forward us the following details:

    • Full name of the Will maker and last known address;
    • The date of death; and
    • A copy of the Will.

Please call before making a payment via bank transfer or cheque so that we can ensure the details you have are correct.
