Help SAHMRI create healthier futures this giving season

Imagine

Right now, hundreds of scientists are working inside our iconic headquarters which sits in the heart of one of the largest health and medical research precincts in the southern hemisphere.

Over the past ten years, they have turned dreams into daily treatments, new knowledge and better health-related policies. About the only thing this elite team of researchers can’t do is create the dollars that keeps the science progressing.

This is where we need your help, your imagination.

There are four projects of significance right now - please consider making a gift to the area that fits your vision for a healthier future. Your support will help our researchers turn scientific breakthroughs into better health for people everywhere.

Finding ways to reduce the risk of developing dementia

In a world-leading approach, Associate Professor Tim Sargeant is tackling dementia by looking at one of the root causes: ageing itself.

His team has identified how the body’s recycling system changes as we age, which leads to dementia-causing waste like amyloid plaques to build up in the brain.

There is much more work to be done, and your donation will make a difference.

Helping to prevent more preterm children from developing cerebral palsy

While magnesium sulphate is known to prevent cerebral palsy in preterm babies, we still don’t know exactly who to give the treatment and the best way to give it.

A study by Dr Emily Shepherd and her team is filling these knowledge gaps, investigating how magnesium sulphate and the manner of delivery affects different groups of pregnant women and their children.

The early results are positive, and your donation will help maximise the impacts of this life-changing treatment.

Reducing deaths and complications from diabetes in Indigenous populations

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience Type 2 diabetes at a higher rate than any other group of our population, yet this disease is mostly preventable.

In partnership with Indigenous communities and health services, SAHMRI’s Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity team is developing specific resources to boost local access to health advice and support.

Your donation can help prevent unnecessary deaths from Type 2 diabetes.

New pathways for children’s brain cancer

More Australian children die from brain cancer than any other disease, and many children who do survive endure lifelong side effects from their treatments.

SAHMRI is leading the fight to beat children’s brain cancer with South Australia’s first paediatric brain tumour biobank.

The biobank is used to study child brain tumours into the future, to develop better treatment options and minimise the side effects of those treatments.
