The Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity Theme (AHE) at SAHMRI is a leading national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led unit dedicated to wellbeing and achieving health equity among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia through quality and safe health and medical research.

The Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity theme are seeking highly motivated researchers who have strong interests in health equity and working with Aboriginal communities to deliver high quality and beneficial research, to join our team working in the chronic conditions space. This unique role offers excellent flexibility with opportunities to support one of two studies in a part-time capacity (0.5FTE), or both studies in a full-time capacity.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership, coordination and support of high-quality research activities
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner organisations in the co-design, development and implementation of the research. This includes data custodians. To do this local and interstate travel is required
  • Assist with recruitment of participants and health services and their on-going retention
  • Prepare evidence that supports community-based research activities, including health and clinic programs and Indigenous data sovereignty.
  • Contribute to ethical requirements inclusive of obtaining approvals, appropriate research conduct and reporting
  • Assist with administration functions, such as staff recruitment, travel and raising requisitions, related to community-based activities
  • Undertake research activities in local communities as required
  • Support the negotiation of data to achieve research activities
  • Lead diverse study communication initiatives
  • Contribute to knowledge translation activities, including literature reviews, peer-reviewed publications, preparation of conference presentations, and documentation for various audiences.
  • Ensure research activities and other outputs are compliant and aligned with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and working to the principles of the South Australian Aboriginal Health Research Accord.

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • PhD or equivalent with 3 to 4 years research experience post PhD or equivalent.
  • Experience working on data linkage projects is highly valued for the Cancer project
  • Strong qualitative experience is highly valued
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations or communities.
  • Understanding of the drivers of chronic disease and its impact on health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including the clinical and social issues relating to chronic disease prevention and management.
  • Innovative use of technology in the coordination of diverse teams, research partners and research participants.
  • Prior experience of high quality and successful engagement with stakeholders, including;
    • Co-Theme Leaders, academic and professional staff within Aboriginal Health Equity, other SAHMRI partners and administrative staff;
    • Research partners and collaborators at other universities and institutions;
    • Wardliparingga and SAHMRI staff; Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners and their organisational representatives participating in the research;
    • Data custodians;
    • Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies as required;
    • Industry (local, national and international) organisations as required;
    • Students and interns and volunteers.
  • Communicate research findings and assist with the development and implementation of knowledge translation activities, within high impact peer-reviewed journals, at conferences and within committees and other bodies relevant to the role.
