The Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity Theme (AHE) at SAHMRI is a leading national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led unit dedicated to wellbeing and achieving health equity among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia through quality and safe health and medical research.
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Fellow to join Wardliparingga. In this role, you will partner with key organisations to lead the implementation of a culturally appropriate rehabilitation and secondary prevention model to support primary care for Aboriginal people hospitalised with chronic disease.
You will work closely with Aboriginal health system managers and researchers responding to community priorities for chronic disease care, to test and trial the effect of the program with aims to improve the delivery of evidence-based care and quality of life.
About the role
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide leadership, coordination and support of high-quality research activities
- Establish and maintain relationships with partner organisations in the co-design, development and implementation of the research.
- Lead the preparation of ethics applications, service, and site agreements, reporting and study documentation and dissemination of research outputs and outcomes.
- Promote scholarship and integrity and support a culture of excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
- Contribute to ethical requirements inclusive of obtaining approvals, appropriate research conduct and reporting
- Undertake research activities in local communities as required
- Support the negotiation of data to achieve research activities
- Communicate research findings and assist with the development and implementation of knowledge translation activities, within high impact peer-reviewed journals, at conferences and within committees and other bodies relevant to the role.
- Ensure research activities and other outputs are compliant and aligned with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and working to the principles of the South Australian Aboriginal Health Research Accord.
About You
The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:
- PhD or equivalent (MPH) with 3 to 4 years research experience post PhD or equivalent.
- Bachelor of Nursing, Medicine or Allied Health equivalent.
- Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in a health research or clinical setting.
- Strong interest in population health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations or communities.
- Understanding of the drivers of chronic disease and its impact on health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including the clinical and social issues relating to chronic disease prevention and management.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally safe, sensitive and accountable manner with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait
- Demonstrated competence and knowledge of participants/patients experiences of complex health issues.
- Knowledge of clinical research practices and/or experience in conducting research.
