Toenail Fungus Study

Evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a topical solution for onychomycosis of the toenails

Toenail Fungus Study

We're seeking people with clinically diagnosed onychomycosis (toenail fungus) to help us evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a potential new treatment.

Onychomycosis is a very common condition that affects an estimated 10% of the Australia population. The condition can be uncomfortable, embarrassing and stubborn.

Existing treatments can take months to provide relief, and often don't fully cure the infection. This is why we're evaluating a new treatment option. This study hopes to determine whether once or twice daily treatment of 2.4% Terbinafine Hydrochloride Topical Solution could cure the condition.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are 18-70 years old
  • Have been clinically diagnosed with onychomycosis on at least one of your big toenails
  • Do not have diabetes
  • Can travel to SAHMRI for study visits on 8 separate occasions

Why should I take part?

  • You will be given a topical solution that may treat or cure your toenail fungus
  • You will be contributing to important research that may help people with Onychomycosis in the future
  • Eligible participants will be reimbursed up to $1200 upon completion of the study

What does the study involve?

If you choose to participate, you will be randomly assigned (similar to rolling a dice) to receive one of several topical treatments. These include:

  • The study topical solution with active ingredients applied once daily (25% chance)
  • The study topical solution with active ingredients applied twice daily (25% chance)
  • A topical solution already available applied once daily (25% chance)
  • A placebo applied once daily (12.5% chance)
  • A placebo applied twice daily (12.5% chance)

All topical solutions (similar consistency to nail polish) will look the same, and you will not be told which treatment you are receiving.

Participation in the study will last approximately 12 months. This includes 48 weeks of at least once daily treatment application. There will be up to 7 study visits to the clinic over the course of 12 months.
