Summary

Part-Time Contract (0.6FTE - 0.8FTE) | 12-Month Contract | Identified Position

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we deliver world-class research that improves health and quality of life for all people.

The Senior Project Officer plays a key role in delivering the newly developed Gumnut Babies Program (pilot). You will implement the program across two sites and support the evaluation that follows.

Gumnut Babies is a 16-week parenting program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and their babies (up to 2.5 years), with a nominated support person. The program supports strong mother–baby relationships within the context of Aboriginal families, kinship, culture and community—honouring cultural traditions, promoting healing and empowerment, and strengthening family wellbeing.

In addition to program delivery, you will provide research support across other ACRA projects. This includes coordinating community engagement and consultation; supporting the development and pre-testing of culturally appropriate activities and questionnaires; collecting and managing quantitative data; and conducting interviews with Aboriginal families in metropolitan Adelaide. You will work closely with stakeholders, governance groups and community members to ensure respectful, meaningful engagement.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate the day to day operations of the Gumnuts program including scheduling, venues and logistics.
  • Build strong relationships with Aboriginal mothers, families and nominated support people throughout the program.
  • Partner with local Aboriginal organisations and Aboriginal Family Birthing Programs to support recruitment and delivery.
  • Coordinate cultural and program supports such as Elders, and maintain an Aboriginal Governance Group.
  • Manage program administration, resources and participant supports (materials, catering, transport).
  • Collect program data (questionnaires/yarning) and support evaluation activities and reporting.

Service delivery

  • Promote ACRA programs and strengthen service partnerships to support ongoing growth.
  • Provide backup support to maintain program continuity during staff absences.
  • Monitor service quality and outcomes, maintaining quality-control processes.

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Qualifications/training in psychology, counselling, narrative therapy (or similar) and experience facilitating groups.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.
  • Trauma-informed, culturally safe practice using a strengths-based, holistic approach.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills (families, community, governance groups, partners).
  • Strong written skills (reports/presentations) and confidence collecting data (questionnaires and yarning).
  • Desirable: understanding of the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Framework and perinatal/infant/maternal mental health.
