Summary
Full-Time | 2-Year Contract
At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.
About the role
SAHMRI is seeking a Research Associate / Research Fellow (mathematical /statistical modelling) to join the Health Policy Centre as part of a new partnership with Preventive Health SA.
This position will develop and apply stochastic simulation models to inform public health policy decision‑making. The primary focus will be modelling the health and economic impacts of prevention strategies, particularly interventions aimed at reducing preventable chronic disease‑related hospital admissions (for example, diabetes‑related complications).
The outputs of this work will directly inform South Australian Government policy, and will be translated into high‑quality briefings, reports, and peer‑reviewed publications.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of behavioural scientists, policy experts and researchers working on population‑level public health challenges, with a strong focus on dietary risk and obesity prevention.
This is a single full‑time position that may be appointed at either Research Associate or Research Fellow level, depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking the development and application of mathematical and statistical models of preventable hospitalisations using appropriate techniques. This will include:
- Sourcing and managing data from a variety of sources
- Designing and delivering dynamic simulation modelling solutions according to project requirements
- Delivering high quality and interpretable analysis of model outputs within the agreed timelines.
- Conduct literature searches and literature reviews to inform the development of the models.
- Preparing and writing reports and briefings for stakeholders.
- Liaise with policy agencies and stakeholders to ensure model alignment with stakeholder needs.
- Contribute to peer reviewed journal publications and presentations for scientific conferences, and grant applications and funding submissions.
About You
The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:
- Minimum of tertiary qualification (with honours) in mathematics and/or statistics, with experience in stochastic simulation modelling of real-world data. Masters and/or PhD desirable, or equivalent research experience in a similar health research setting.
- Experience in developing simulation models using at least one of the following dynamic simulation modelling techniques: system dynamics modelling, discrete event simulation, agent-based modelling (last two preferable).
- Demonstrated proficiency in high-level analytical skills and a methodological approach to data management, including experience in producing research-level documented code in an open-source language.
- Good knowledge of data security, maintaining confidentiality, and sensitivity to political considerations.
- Report writing skills that demonstrate attention to detail including accurate referencing, data entry and formatting, with proficiency in referencing programs such as Endnote.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for liaising with internal and external partners to develop and implement research and for communicating research findings in a constructive and relevant manner.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in public health, medicine, economics, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in or ability to contribute to writing journal publications and grant applications and submissions to funding bodies.
Special Requirements
- Some out of hours’ work may be required.
- Any conflicts arising from the persons’ interests and associations with food, beverage, alcohol or tobacco industry, including commercial interests, will be taken into account in consideration of the persons’ suitability for this role.
- To be considered for this position, applicants must hold relevant working rights within Australia at the time of application.
