This project aims to listen to and learn from the experiences of Aboriginal Community members in South Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.
By capturing community stories, reflections and lessons, the research will help ensure that future crisis responses are better informed, culturally appropriate and led by the voices of Aboriginal people.
This study involves community consultation through an online survey and in-person focus groups, held in six areas across South Australia that are a combination of metro, regional and remote communities. These conversations are designed to reflect diverse experiences across regions, age groups and genders.
The study findings will highlight a key strength and offer recommendations to improve outbreak responses. This will be provided in a Community Report for participants and partnering organisations and a report to the Spinifex Foundation. Results may be useful for a range of audiences to inform future responses to pandemics or emergencies.
This research builds on the work of the First Nations Philanthropic Funders Working Group (FNPFWG), a collective of representatives from Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in South Australia. It continues the vision of Aboriginal-led solutions by documenting community experiences and supporting long-term planning for better health outcomes.
