Omega-3 Testing in Pregnancy

Free omega‑3 testing is now part of routine antenatal screening in South Australia

Information for Health Professionals

Omega 3 testing is part of routine antenatal screening in South Australia.

Why omega-3 matters?
  • Low omega-3 status in early pregnancy is associated with increased risk of early preterm birth (before 34 weeks).
  • Evidence supports targeted omega-3 supplementation for women identified as having low omega-3 levels.
  • Testing before 20 weeks’ gestation identifies women most likely to benefit.

Clinically relevant information will be available at https://sahealth.sa.gov.au/pretermbirth by the end of 2026. In the meantime, see the resources below.
