Dementia, Brain Function and Neuroscience

Dementia is not a specific disease. The term refers to a range of symptoms that are caused by disorders that impact brain function. Dementia can affect a person’s memory, behaviour and physical capabilities. Parkinson’s Disease is a movement disorder that originates in the brain that can cause symptoms similar to dementia.

Many of the SAHMRI research groups dedicated to preventing and relieving symptoms of dementia are found within the Hopwood Centre for Neurobiology. The Centre is named for Emeritus Professor John Hopwood whose work was instrumental in helping save lives of those with rare childhood dementia.
