FEMME-HEART Study

Study on women’s hearts, endurance effects, and lifelong health.

FEMME-HEART Study
Project Status: In progress

The FEMME-HEART Study (Female Athlete’s Heart) will be one of the first studies to focus exclusively on the cardiovascular adaptations to endurance exercise amongst high-level, female endurance athletes.

The majority of research into the athletic heart has been performed in predominantly male cohorts, potentially limiting its translation for female athletes. Uniquely, the FEMME-HEART study will recruit high-level endurance athletes who are either currently competing or have retired from endurance sports, therefore enabling an assessment of the lifelong effects of endurance exercise. These findings will potentially reveal the prevalence and incidence of heart rhythm disorders in female athletes, as well as the longer-term benefits of exercise participation for women’s health. We aim to provide a rich data set that supports moving away from the use of male data to understand female physiology in athletes.

Female endurance athletes and non-athletes wanting to know more, and potentially take part in the study are encouraged to register their interest below.
