Associate Professor Carmel Collins

Associate Professor Carmel Collins is a Principal Research Fellow with Pregnancy and Perinatal Care, SAHMRI Women and Kids.

Before moving to a research career Carmel was a senior neonatal intensive care clinician (Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, Neonatal Intensive Care Certificate). With her extensive clinical experience and her clinical trial expertise Carmel plays a unique role in the interface between research and clinical practice. She has led or had significant involvement in multi and single centre randomised trials totalling nearly 10,000 participants. Associate Professor Collins’ contribution to neonatal care was recognised when she was made the first Fellow of the Australian College of Neonatal Nurses.

Associate Professor Collins has over 90 publications and published in leading medical journals including NEJM, JAMA, BMJ, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. She has been awarded over $18 million in research funding. Carmel is recognised for her research in the nutritional management of preterm infants, breast feeding support, dietary fatty acids and protein supplementation which has made significant contributions to clinical practice. She was an invited external expert in the World Health Organisation/UNICEF review of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. Carmel is committed to research partnership with parents of preterm infants and clinicians and has worked with both in determining the research priorities with the use of donor human milk from their perspective.
