Dr Andrew McPhee

Dr Andy McPhee is a Neonatal Consultant at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital with over 35 years’ clinical experience, including a role as State Director of Neonatal Medicine (2012-18). Andy has been actively involved in clinical research throughout his career, including involvement in numerous NHMRC-funded RCTs (e.g: ACHOIS, DINO, DOMInO, LIMIT, N3RO and ORIP) and as a member of two Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) grants. Much of this research has been generated by strong research collaborations with the Child Nutrition Research Centre at SAHMRI and the Dept Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide.

Andy’s primary research interest is in perinatal nutrition with a current research focus being the impact of breast milk in neonatal nutrition, particularly in the preterm infant; in this regard, he was the key SA neonatal clinician involved in the development of the Australian Red Cross Milk Bank in Sydney, which now supplies pasteurized donor human milk for preterm infants whose mothers are unable to provide adequate amounts of mother’s own milk.

In addition to clinical research, Andy has been actively involved in postgraduate training via his involvement with the RACP Advanced Training Committee in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine, has been involved in the development of a number of neonatal practice guidelines and was the convenor of a SA workgroup who have developed widely used e-learning platforms for training in basic and advanced neonatal resuscitation.

Andy has published over 80 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in JAMA, NEJM, BMJ and Lancet. He has been a member of numerous NHMRC Project Grant Review Panels and regularly reviews for a number of journals.
