Computed Tomography (CT)

16-slice Philips Brilliance CT scanner. The system is capable of various routine CT studies and has various reconstruction capabilities e. g. volume rendering techniques, multiplanar reconstructions etc.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

LARIF’s flagship instrument is the high field 3-Tesla Siemens Magnetom Skyra MRI. The Skyra 3T is a 48-channel XQ gradient MRI scanner with 70cm wide bore. The system comes with 32 ­channel head coil, 20-channel head/neck coil, TxRx head coil, special purpose coil, flex coils, loop coils, 32-channel spine coil, 18-channel body coils and MR contrast injector.

Applications: Neurological imaging, Fetal imaging, Spectroscopy, Cardiac and Vascular imaging, Musculoskeletal, Forensic and Veterinary imaging


Siemens Biograph mCT-S (64) is the newest addition to the suite of imaging modalities at PIRL. Common and novel radiopharmaceuticals are available through the Molecular Imaging and Therapy Research Unit (MITRU) at SAHMRI's North Terrace facility.

Multipurpose Catheterisation Laboratory

The LARIF Catheterisation suite is equipped with a Siemens multipurpose floor-mounted Artis Zee unit. Equipped with a range of features including exposure modulation tools, digital subtraction angiography, steep angulation, position memory and more, the unit is suitable for a multitude of large animal research.

Applications: Cardiovascular research, interventional procedures and catheter and device localisation

Permetium (4D Medical)

The Permetium Pulmonary Preclinical Imaging System is a small animal research scanner which uses x-rays and computed tomography capabilities to measure respiratory function in small rodents.

  • No requirement for contrast
  • Cardiac and pulmonary gating capabilities
