We are looking for a reliable Operations Assistant to join the SAHMRI Bioresources team. The Bioresources team are dedicated to providing day-to-day husbandry and care for laboratory animals within the Bioresources animal facility, ensuring high standards of animal welfare and facility hygiene are maintained at all times in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. The Operations Assistant will actively support Bioresources day-to-day operations, performing basic husbandry duties such as cleaning/sanitizing caging and accessory equipment; sanitizing/decontaminating all work areas and assisting in Cage Wash, laundry and other support areas.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide support in transporting animal cages, large equipment, water bottles, feed and bedding supplies within the animal facilities
  • Conduct general cleaning and housekeeping of cage wash and service areas, including washing walls, floors, equipment, air vents, sinks, doors, door frames, feed and nestlets containers.
  • Operate mechanical cage washers and bulk autoclaves in accordance with SOP and to report promptly any equipment problems to the manager
  • Fill clean animal cages with proper amount and type of bedding and enrichment
  • Fill clean water bottles and prepare for sterilization
  • Assist in conducting daily, weekly and other periodic checks of cage wash equipment including conducting and logging quality assurance test such as autoclave test and biological indicators
  • Launder used scrubs, gowns and socks and stock them appropriately

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Year 12 or equivalent with a combination of relevant knowledge, training and/ or experience, preferably in the animal or biomedical industry.
  • Previous cleaning experience is desirable.
  • After training, ability to properly operate a variety of cleaning, sanitizing equipment including rack washers, autoclaves, tunnel washers, floor scrubbers etc
  • A conscientious attitude and concern for safety and quality is a must
  • Ability to work well in a team but also alone
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good timekeeping and organisational skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of work health and safety issues
  • The role has physical requirements including:
    • Lifting – up to 23kg/50 pounds on a regular basis
    • Pushing/pulling trolley on weight bearing wheels – up to 245kg/540 pounds
    • Significant percentage of day standing, bending, walking and working in tight spaces
  • The role has close daily interaction with animals, latex, waste products and bedding
  • Collection, sterilisation and disposal of biological waste

Special Requirements

  • Compliance with SAHMRI Immunisation Policy and COVID-19 Vaccination Plan.
  • Some out of hours’ work may be required.
  • Tasks to be undertaken are of a physical and repetitive nature.
  • This position requires a pre-employment medical examination to determine suitability for the physical requirements of the role.
  • This position is not suitable for individuals with existing allergic conditions
