Part Time (0.8 FTE), 12 Month Contract

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.

The Lysosomal Health in Ageing group’s goal is to develop interventions that increase autophagy earlier in life to prevent dementia. This position will investigate measurement of lysosomal system function and innate immune system elements in the brain and peripheral tissues.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Trialling and analysing different antibodies on sections of brain and other peripheral tissues and cells using confocal and brightfield microscopy.
  • Undertaking other biochemical techniques as required (e.g. ELISA and western blot).
  • Generating, analysing, interpreting and reporting complex data.
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of new and novel techniques and methodologies.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of research directions based on experimental outcomes.

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in a relevant field
  • At least three years’ experience in immunohistochemistry techniques
  • Experience in the use of brain tissue
  • Experience with the use of confocal and brightfield microscopy
  • Working knowledge of neuroanatomical structures
  • Histochemistry, particularly with the use of commercially available antibodies in either chromogenic or fluorescent-based immunohistochemical assays
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry method development, image analysis and stereology is desirable
  • Experience in biochemistry techniques, such as ELISA and Western blot
  • Previous experience working in a research laboratory is highly desirable

  • Some out of hours’ work may be required.
  • Compliance with SAHMRI Immunisation Policy and COVID-19 Vaccination Plan.
